Your first 100 followers will mostly be people you can name. Strangers come later, once Instagram’s test audience has a reason to watch your videos to the end.

Most guides mash those two jobs into one and tell an empty account to “use hashtags and post Reels.” That’s a rough plan when nobody is around to give your first post a push.

Here’s the plan I’d actually run. You’ll finish with a profile that earns the follow, nine to twelve posts live, a list of 100 people to tell, and a weekly routine for testing what strangers watch.

How do you grow an Instagram account from scratch?

Job one is people. Job two is strangers. They need different tools, and mixing them is how new accounts stall.

People are the customers, neighbors, suppliers, and friends who’ll follow because they know you. They don’t need convincing. They need to be told you exist.

Strangers find you through recommendations, and those run on an audition. Instagram head Adam Mosseri explained in December 2025 that a new post goes to a limited audience first and that small accounts can still get significant reach if early viewers respond. exchange4media

At zero followers, every viewer is a stranger. That narrows what matters. Mosseri has pointed to watch time as the top metric, with sends (someone forwarding your post to a friend by DM) carrying more weight than likes for people who don’t follow you. metagard

So the whole plan fits in two sentences. Tell the people who know you. Make videos strangers finish and send.

Instagram account from scratch

Step 1: Switch to a professional account before you post.

Do this first. Three things you’ll want later only work on professional accounts.

Trial Reels were launched to all professional accounts. Google indexing of public posts since July 10, 2025, covers professional accounts (business and creator, age 18+). And the insights you’ll read in Step 8 live there too. route notes

Then check the privacy setting that lets search engines show your public posts. Coverage puts it under Settings, then Privacy, labeled as allowing public photos and videos to appear in search engine results. Menus move, so look for that label if the path has changed.

Pick Creator if you’re a personal brand and Business if you’re a shop. Don’t agonize.

Step 2: Build a profile that earns the follow at a glance.

Your username and name field are for searching real estate. A summary of Mosseri’s explanation says Instagram matches what people type against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags, and locations.

So put what you do in the name field, not just your brand. Use this format: [Brand] | [what you sell] | [city or audience].

Then the bio. Answer three questions, one line each: who it’s for, what they get, and what to do next.

Photo: a clear face for a personal brand, a clean logo for a shop. Link: one, pointing to where you want a new follower to go.

Step 3: Post nine to twelve originals before you tell anyone.

A visitor who lands on a profile with two posts has nothing to judge. Nine to twelve gives them a point of view.

That number is my rule of thumb, not Instagram’s. Virallized lands on a similar range: nine to twelve original posts on one subject. virtualized

“Original” means yours: your photos, your footage, your take. On April 30, 2026, Instagram announced that accounts that primarily post unoriginal content in photos, carousels, or reels will no longer be shown in places where it recommends content. [Source: Instagram for Creators] Instagram

A new account is the one most tempted to fill the grid with reposts so it looks busy. Don’t. It closes the exact door you need open.

Keep one topic across all of them. Make at least half short videos. That’s my call: video is the format you’ll be testing in Step 5.

Step 4: First 100 Instagram followers

How to grow the first 100 Instagram followers
Build momentum early: implement core profile optimizations to secure your first 100 Instagram followers organically.

Open your notes app and list them. Customers. Suppliers. Neighbors. Other local shop owners. Friends who’d actually look. Past colleagues.

Can’t reach 100? Start with the 40 you’ve got.

Then tell them one at a time. Follow them from the new account, reply to something they posted, and send a one-line message: New account—here’s what it’s about. I’d love you as one of the first followers. A mass blast skips the part where it feels personal.

Retail brands have a shortcut most people overlook: the customers are already in your orders. Put a QR code on packaging inserts and receipts. Add the handle to your email footer. If you have a store, put a sign at the till. Each of those people has already paid you once.

Here’s what this step does and what it doesn’t. I wouldn’t claim your first 100 boost distribution. Their job is simpler: when a stranger lands on your profile after a Reel, they see a page with people on it, not an empty one.

And skip any page that tells you how much more likely friends are to follow than strangers. I couldn’t find a trustworthy number.

[YOUR EXAMPLE: a retail client’s first 100 sources, and which one brought the most follows.]

Step 5: How do strangers find a brand-new Instagram account?

The first two seconds of a video are the whole game. Watch time ranks highest, so a hook that holds beats a clever ending nobody reaches.

Write the opening line before you shoot anything. Say what the viewer gets. Cut every second before it.

Then end with a reason to send: “Send this to the friend who needs it.” That’s a direct ask for the signal that matters most with strangers. Ask once, in plain words.

Now the tool is built for your situation. Instagram rolled out Trial Reels before 2024 ended. A trial reel is shown to non-followers first, and you can set it to share with your followers automatically if it performs well based on views in the first 72 hours. You get detailed results after 24 hours, and a trial reel stays off your grid and Reels tab unless you publish it. Instagram Releases Trial Reels to Help Creators Reach New Audiences +2

A zero-follower account has no audience to protect. So send every reel you’re unsure about out as a trial. Keep your Step 3 posts as normal posts, so the grid isn’t empty.

Here’s the weekly test. Take one idea and shoot three versions with different opening lines. Run all three as trial reels. Keep the one that held attention, and drop the others.

Change one thing at a time. Otherwise, you learn nothing.

Step 6: Write captions the way people search.

Starting July 10, 2025, Instagram posts began showing up in Google Search results. So a caption now works like a page title in Instagram’s search and in Google’s. plannedly

Put the plain-language thing someone would type into the first line of your caption. Add alt text to your images. Put the same words on screen so a muted viewer gets it.

Hashtags next, and this is where the pages fight. As reported in April 2025, Mosseri said hashtags don’t significantly increase your reach. I’d use three to five relevant ones and move on.

Step 7: Spend fifteen minutes a day where your buyers already hang out.

Pick ten accounts your future customers already follow. Leave comments that add something. “Great post” adds nothing. A real answer to the question in the caption does.

Reply to every comment on your own posts, however few. DM someone only when you have a real reason: a question or a thank-you.

And don’t touch automation. Instagram’s Help Center tells people not to use apps that offer likes and followers and says accounts that keep using them may be limited, disabled, or terminated. Instagram

Ten accounts and fifteen minutes are my numbers, not Instagram’s. Adjust them to fit your week.

Step 8: Read insights once a week and change one thing.

Look at your last five posts. Did strangers see them?

If they didn’t, your problem is the hook or the topic. If they did but didn’t follow, your problem is the profile. That’s the same split I walk through in [Why Can’t I Grow on Instagram].

Pick one change. Write it down. Check it next week.

How long does it take to get your first 100 Instagram followers?

Nobody has a trustworthy number. One guide says most new creators reach 100 followers within 2-4 weeks with five posts a week plus 30 minutes of daily engagement. I found no source behind that timeline. Another reports an 80 to 90 percent success rate for an 8-week method. No source for that either. Don’t plan around either one. creatorflowmallary

Here’s my rule instead: judge the plan after twelve posts, not three.

If you’ve posted twelve originals, told your list, and run the weekly test, and strangers still aren’t showing up, change the hook and the topic. Don’t change the platform.

What mistakes wreck a brand-new Instagram account?

Avoid common Instagram account mistakes to prevent dropping analytics and maintain steady organic reach.

Buying followers. At least one page ranking for this keyword is a follower seller. Instagram’s own Help Center says to stay away, as covered in Step 7. Bought followers don’t watch your videos, so they add nothing to the signals that matter.

Filling the grid with reposts. See Step 3. It’s the fastest way to fall out of recommendations.

Changing topics every week. Mosseri has said low reach among non-followers usually means Instagram can’t tell who to show a post to. A new topic every week keeps you in that spot. magnetic

Judging a post by its likes. Watch time and sends rank higher, so a post with few likes can still be doing its job.

Posting five times and vanishing. One burst teaches Instagram nothing about you.

Should you do this yourself or hire help?

Do it yourself if you can post weekly, you have a product or point of view worth showing, and you can wait a few months. It’s cheaper, and the eight steps above are enough to start.

Skip organic as your launch plan if you need sales this month. Ads and email move faster. Organic from zero is slow.

Hire help when you have the plan but can’t hold the pace, or when you’re a retail brand with a launch window.

At Digital Faisal, we run Instagram growth and management for US retail brands and small businesses: 500+ retail brands served, with a money-back guarantee. We don’t buy followers or use automation.

We’re not the right fit if you want 10,000 followers by Friday, if nobody on your side can approve posts each week, or if your content is mostly reposts. We’d rebuild that first, and it’s slower than you’d like.

Your next step

Tonight: switch to a professional account, write the bio, and list your 100 names. Tomorrow: post the first three of your nine to twelve.

FAQs

How do I grow on Instagram with 0 followers?

Tell the people who already know you, then make short videos strangers watch to the end and send. Switch to a professional account, finish your profile, and post nine to twelve original posts first. Instagram tests new posts on a small audience, so your hook matters most.

How do I get my first 100 followers on Instagram?

List 100 people you know (customers, suppliers, neighbors, friends) and message each one personally. Follow them from the new account and comment on their posts. If you run a shop, add a QR code to packaging and receipts.

How long does it take to get 100 followers on Instagram?

Nobody has a verified timeline. Judge your plan after twelve original posts, not three. If strangers still aren’t finding you by then, change your hook and topic, not the platform.

Do hashtags still help a new Instagram account grow?

Barely. As reported in April 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said hashtags don’t significantly increase reach. Use three to five relevant ones, and put your main keyword in the first line of the caption. Public posts from professional accounts have been Google-indexable since July 2025.

Is it worth buying Instagram followers?

No. Instagram’s Help Center says not to use apps that sell followers, and warns that accounts can be limited, disabled, or terminated. Bought followers also don’t watch your videos, so they don’t help you reach real people.

How often should a new Instagram account post?

Instagram hasn’t set an official number. After your first nine to twelve posts, aim for three solid posts a week and hold that for twelve weeks. Steady beats bursts.
